From minimalist composer to Pink Floyd lyricist, with many interesting stops in between, Anthony Moore (a.k.a. Anthony More) has had quite a varied career. Sadly, obscurity, in relation to the music buying public, is the one consistent aspect of his work. More's the pity. Moore's first few solo recordings, which fit squarely into the John Cage school of minimalism, give little hint of the idiosyncratic pop music he would later write. However, in 1972, when he joined forces with like minded oddballs Peter Blegvad and Dagmar Krause to form Slapp Happy, his potential for peculiar pop was realized. Moore and Blegvad split the writing duties for the band, crafting songs about spies, Siamese twins and other assorted oddities. In 1975, shortly after Slapp Happy merged with Henry Cow, Moore departed to relaunch his solo career. He collaborated with Canterbury scene legend Kevin Ayers, as well as Blegvad and Andy Summers on his first post Slapp Happy effort, 1977's Out. Prompted by disappointing sales, Moore's label, Virgin, dropped him soon afterward. Moore went on to record a pair of exceptional albums -- Flying Doesn't Help and World Service -- on small independent labels. After 1984's The Only Choice, Moore traded the uncertain fate as unsung singer for steadier employment as lyricist for the post Roger Waters incarnation of Pink Floyd. Slapp Happy sporadically reared its quirky head into the '90s, recording occasional singles and even an opera (Camera) for British television. In 1998, Moore, Blegvad and Krause reunited to record Ça Va, an album of all new material. In the late '90s, many of Moore's earlier works were made available on CD for the first time.



New reissue of the 6th chronological solo album by Anthony Moore (spelled here as "More" for whatever reason). Blueprint refers to this release as "a hybrid version of previously unreleased tracks and the best versions from the original album". "Anthony Moore began his recording career working in experimental film and music releasing two avant garde solo albums in the early 70s. Polydor Germany refused to release a third project so Anthony teamed up with Dagmar Krausse and Peter Blegvad to form Slapp Happy. Slapp Happy joined forces with German pioneers Faust to release their debut album Sort Of in 1972. By 1974 Slapp Happy had signed to Virgin and acquired a cult following of fans, critics, and musicians such as Henry Cow and Robert Wyatt. Anthony left Slapp Happy in 1975, but Virgin failed to turn him into a pop star. Signing to cutting edge indie label Do-It, he released Flying Doesn't Help in 1979 and World Service in 1981. Similar in style to other mavericks like John Cale and Kevin Ayers with many lyrical twists."

For the third volume in Rvng's FRKWYS (pronounced Freakways) series, ARP (aka Alexis Georgopoulos) and Anthony Moore contribute an album of modern minimalist compositions culled from sources both old and new. From the reworking of some of Moore's unreleased late 60s compositions and the incorporation of actual extant tapes from that time, to the newly minted pieces by Georgopolous along with new accompaniments to the original recordings, it's another vibrant addition to the ongoing series in which contemporary artists are paired with their progenitors by way of remix, reinterpretation, and original collaboration.

The idea to pair the two composers was born of Georgopoulos' appreciation for Pieces from the Cloudland Ballroom (1971), Moore's adventurous avant-garde album described by Alan Licht as neither a "Krautrock or artrock LP but a bona fide minimal classic". Upon listening to several pieces by his symphonious accomplice-to-be, Moore was "struck by a powerful sense of familiarity, a recognition of certain musical values close to my own heart being explored by someone else".

Mutual admiration formed, Moore and Georgopoulos came together in September 2009 at Atlantic Sound's Brooklyn studio, a scene serenely inspired by the live room's forward face on the East River. Recorded to a 24 track, 2" Studer tape machine, the album begins with the stringed drone of "Today's Psalter", a piece named for the instrument at its thematic core (re-established later with "Yesterday's Psalter"). "Spinette" is a lively and cyclical measure exercise built on an original work. And, at end of the first side, "Piano Waves" reinvents a Magnetophone tape recording Moore originally realized in the 60s as a sonorous anchor on the album.

The second side begins with "Wild Grass I (for Arthur Russell)", composed by Georgopoulos for a cello, violin, and piano ensemble. As with its companion piece, "Wild Grass II (for Robert Wyatt)" takes heroic inspiration and uses the intimate instrumentation to create a movement compelling in its refined gestures. "Mirrors & Forks" returns to Moore's treasure trove of tape loops, seething into "Yesterday's Psalter" and then a lunar-lit rendition of "Slow Moon's Rose" sung by Georgopoulos, a song originally recorded by Moore in 1972 as part of Slapp Happy.
